Metal Sonic ready to kick ass!! Well, he probably thinks so, actually it's far more likely that he is about to get trashed by Sonic and Tails. But we can forgive him, because this picture is based a long time ago, and it's only the second time he's met Sonic and the first time he's met Tails. So the poor robot really doesn't know what he's up against.

My entry for the contest at :icontrueblueasylum:

Download for a huge high-res version (if you want to print it or whatever)

My entry for last month's contest isn't doing as well in the poll as I had hoped, but I won't be discouraged! This gives me more reason to work on my art... and also to go back to my painterly style, which I haven't used for quite a while. It's refreshing.

METAL SONIC!!!!! Originally, I was gonna do a Stardust Speedway theme, but then I figured, with Metal's rival stage in Generations, and the re-release of Sonic CD, other people will probably have the same idea. So instead I picked the zone Metal Sonic appears in in his second game. Do you know what that was????

(was a good idea, because Atomic Destroyer is mostly black as opposed to Stardust Speedway with all its bright colours. = Less work for me!)

This was really fun, maybe I'll also enter it into Sega's Sonic CD art contest. You can win a copy of Sonic CD! I already have one on the PS2 but y'know... maybe I could get one for my Sega Mega CD (yeah right)

PS. Many thanks to *TtotheAFFY who bought me some Sonic models for my birthday! Having this little guy [link] to use as a reference has been incredibly helpful! I can turn him any which way and see what he looks like from any angle. It's great!

Upon first viewing this piece, I am instantly struck by Metal Sonic's dynamic pose and the somewhat fisheye view portrayed. It implies power and daring ----most certainly characteristics associated with Metal Sonic. The lights rising up the dark column and the pronounced shadow at the base of the picture indicates a dive into the unknown. The coloration is superb, as well as the shading and reflections. In short words, I am pleased with what I see.
Alas, this is a critique, so I am therefore compelled to more closely scrutinize its execution. Concerning Metal Sonic himself, there is little to criticize. His eyes do seem a bit odd, with the shading about them almost suggesting protruding LED "light pipes", instead of the actual illuminated screen used in official portrayals of the character. Secondly, his fingers seem a wee bit stubby. However, past these very minor grievances, I see nothing negative worth noting.
Last of all, there are a few windows that seem to have certain irregularities about them, little errors that throw off the symmetry of the image somewhat. Again, a rather minor gaffe.
In closing, I once again emphasize that this piece is most impressive. You have produced something unique and beautiful. Thank you.

Sincerely,
R.J. Robledo

I like the details! How the shading was done to make it really shiney and metallic to the point of angle! I also like how Metal Sonic reflects some things :D

Pretty interesting perspective. But it's effective... kinda sucks your gaze into the picture. ;) The dark background's pretty cool; the green light thingies make up some clear lines without being overburding and the simplicity of just black and a few lighter green spots put all the focus on Metal Sonic.
Love the shading and highlighting. The armor really looks like metal, neat and shiny and polished. The reflections of the green lights are great. Compliments also on the hands and screws. They all look really awesome.
The only thing that's not completely perfect are the eyes. The shape is fine and looks like Metal Sonic... but compared to the shiny rest of him they seem... dunno. I guess they'd have to glow a little more or something. It's critique on a high level, but you requested critique (I just can't write real critiques), so I thought I'd point it out.
Anyway, really great picture. :)

Thanks a lot for your kind words! As for the eyes, yes, they are a problem. In fact, it is my own fault for using a confusing reference image (the red of his eyes should be like little lights but I drew them completely different as though they are a solid object!) This was kinda down to me taking artistic licence (and not using a proper ref!). Better planning would have probably prevented the error, and I could've done the red of the eyes reflecting off the surrounding metal.

Ah well, aside from that, I'm pleased with it overall, and I'm glad that other people like it too! There are a few things that could be improved, but you live and learn (ack)

You're very welcome. :)
Don't think that the eyes are a little different from normal is a problem. I guess just a bit of glow around the red would have made a big effect already.

You can indeed be pleased with it.
